Theres was a famous saying which I can't really remember...but it goes something like this - "Life is a harsh teacher. First comes the test, second comes the lesson" There's still a lot for me to learn out in that big bad world, as well as about myself. Life...please be gentle =]
Damn this week has not turned out well for me so far. Having a fallout with a close friend feels just as bad as breaking up with a long time partner...it makes you feel like you're inadequate, unworthy, useless...
What I've learned (however cliched it might sound) is that no matter how hard you try, you simply cannot please everyone. Instead, you must compromise on how your actions will influence the people around you, your friends and family, for the best overall outcome. This is a skill I need to improve on, since clearly my evaluation of certain situations is still pretty sub-par. It doesn't matter if one can stay sober all night, but it does matter when that designated driver doesn't drive anyone home, while letting others under the influence do their work.
This brings me to a famous quote - "with great power, comes great responsibility". It was my responsibility, having the 'power' to drive a car and not be under the influence, to help the intoxicated get home safely, and I have miserably failed in that regard.
Trying to find a song to fit my mood, I realised that there aren't really any songs I know of which talk about a close friendship going astray...damn =/
But there's always the silver lining, and I know I'll never make that stupid mistake again.
Yay-ah! Sexy new layout thanks to bg master Yi. Quite nice, if you ask me. It's got a modern-edge feel with its white font and black background and at the same time brings forth many themes of the new beginning. Observe the graphic in the corner, the placement of the words and the intersection of the lines - even the black background itself. There is subtle yet deeply meaningful themes portrayed by this layout and I'm very happy with it =] Thanks to Yi for creating this beauty hehe =D
On another note, I got my phone back today! Yay! I bet you were all scratching your heads wondering how I got my phone back...but yes, I have it, and all is well with the world once more.
My cousin and aunty return to Macau tomorrow, so the family sent them off tonight...have a safe trip!
Something that kinda bugged me today was that there were soo many things 'planned,' but in the end nothing happened and I just ended up going home. K got proposed, cancelled, reproposed, cancelled, salvaged, cancelled, tried to salvage, nobody wanted to come, epic fail -.- and to top it off a friend invited me to a party the next day but cancelled it shortly after ~__~ Is it that hard to find someone to hang out with on a friday after a long week of uni? Sigh~ Maybe it's a sign to start catching up on my ever-growing mountain of uni work...oh look! I have songs to record and games to play! *keeps busy for the weekend to avoid uni work*
Are you tired of using technology? I for one say no. Take this little anecdote which happened to me today(and no doubt many others) as an example of how technology has integrated itself into our everyday lives.
So I hitched a ride home from a volleyball game from my good pal and fellow volleyballer Tommy, but shortly after I got out of the car I tried to hook up my phone to play some music. My phone was not in my pocket. Panic!!! Phones these days can do so many things so when you've just realised that your phone is gone, everything gets put off kilter - you feel less secure and cut off from the modern world, not to mention bored shitless on the train ride home.
I knew it must have fallen into Tommy's passenger seat, so rather than panicking about cancellation fees and rushing to the nearest payphone, I instead pondered the depths of which technology has infiltrated our everyday lives.
Pretty much everybody carries around a mobile with them these days, and what would we have done without them? Whenever you can ask that question about some form of revolutionary technology, then you know that it has become an integral part of society and the developed world as we know it.
Computers, mobiles, the internet, and the 'ipod' and all its embodiments of portable media are probably 4 of the biggest revolutionary advents of technology in this modern age of the late 20th- early 21st century. The developed world has long since been totally dependent on electricity long before the 21st century, so imagine the chaos we would be in if electricity just disappeared in the click of a finger. No lights, no battery charging, no internet, no communication, no heating, no refridgeration, no washing. Nothing. The world without electricity is possibly just too daunting to imagine.
It's simply amazing how quickly new technologies are integrated and how they can impact on people's lives and working efficiency, as well as their ever-growing dependence on anything electrical. Even today - I was considering not bringing my laptop since I had volleyball, but I knew I couldn't do without it even though it's only been 2 and a half weeks of uni since I've started to use it for physics and computing.
I guess one of the many responsibilities of electrical engineers is to take into account the social impacts of their designs or decisions on the world as we know it. The future of technology is in our hands - and that's what I love about being an electrical engineer. Oh right =D
Being an electrical engineer in-training, it's natural for us to be curious about all things electrical. Since I had recently purchased a new laptop, I was worried about how I would go about maximising both battery life, and the best way to charge it to prolong its total recharge cycles. After surfing on the internet here's what i found - the results were quite interesting!
Myth 1 - the first charge for any new battery needs to be 8-12 hours (priming the battery) - FALSE
We live in the days of lithium-ion batteries which do not need to be primed at all. This myth is only true for the old nickel-cadmium batteries. Hence for lithium-ion batteries, the first charge only needs to be as long as all the other charges! Also, the first full battery will last as long as the next full charge - lithium ion's give 100% right from the get go!
Myth 2 - Its better to completely discharge the battery before charging it fully again - FALSE
once more, this myth is only true for the old nickel-cadmium batteries and does not apply for lithium-ion batteries. In fact, lithium ion batteries are best charged frequently and for optimal battery life, it is good practise to keep their charge above 40%.
Myth 3 - It's bad to keep the battery plugged in with the AC (drip charging) PARTIALLY TRUE
This is only true for very extended periods of time (like if you use a laptop as a PC replacement) but of course laptops these days have circuits designed for drip charging to avoid overcharging (which is very bad for lithium-ion batteries) and to preserve battery life. If your laptop hasn't moved for the past few months, then take out that battery!
other funky facts about lithium-ion batteries - >they are the most commonly used batteries for portable devices such as mobiles, laptops, pda's, handhelds, etc. To check if your batteries are lithium-ion, simply take out your battery and read the label=]
>the life of a lithium ion battery decreases naturally whether you charge it or not.
>Batteries are the only aspect of electronics which haven't been keeping pace with other technological advancements! This is why laptops are still only averaging 4-5 hours - pathetic!! (mine lasts for 8! woot!!) This is also why we now have a trade-off between super high performance (from super-advanced juice-sucking chips) or longer battery life with a decrease in processing power.
>If you're a foreigner, do not buy D batteries (lol xD) *see link below
There you have it folks! Hope you all learned something from this little guide =P *in reference to dimitri martin's hilarious stand up seen below =] -
Judging by my absence of posts, I gather that most of you have concluded that I've been quite busy, and indeed I have. 25 hours of uni a week tends to do that to you...but hey, that's the life of an engineer undergrad! Prioritising your life is so ridiculous when you only have very few precious hours to spare during the week.
Even in the span of 1 week, I can't see everyone I'd like to see, eat with my family as much as I'd like to (usually coming back to a cold lonely left-over dinner) or go out and enjoy myself as much as I'd like to. I guess maybe everyone feels this way, or maybe others have found this balance, but for an engineer it really is quite tough (especially if said engineers have really crap timetables >__<) and I haven't even mentioned the endless stream of work we get! Although my bad procrastination habits never die ( I've finished MGS4 and GTA4 ironically, during the first week of uni, and am now working my way through Super Mario Galaxy!) and so I now stand 2 weeks behind already in the second week of uni. My Sunday is going to be really fun =]
Yea I know I'm always complaining about the same old things, but it's usually always on my mind, because it ends up affecting everything else I do (or don't do).
Random Happenings
>On the plus side of being single and working, my wallet tends to fill up v quickly since I have no medium of money expenditure apart from travel and food. Woo! =D
>I just discovered that my sexy VAIO is made of carbon fibre (i think...) and has an awesome solid state hard drive! Which differs from a normal hard drive in that it has no moving parts, meaning it's really just a really big flash drive, meaning : -faster access to files, -increased robustness, -lighter weight and -no loud whirring sounds! No wonder it was 2k =O and my TZ36 model isnt even out in Australia yet...according to the Australian PDF catalogue. Go Sony!!
>There's nothing quite like driving in your car in the middle of the night on empty roads, with your fave music getting pumped out by awesome speakers and thinking about life =]
>The Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony was nothing short of absolutely spec-fucking-tacular!!! Those stunning performances has never made me feel more proud of belonging to such a great, talented and culturally rich nation.
>Must avoid future bouts of diarrhoea-blogging! Sorry for the bursts of really long posts...I should really get over that habit, but its hard to find time to blog =P
To conclude, here's a ripper of a quote from Matty some years ago in high school about procrastination -
"Procrastination is like masturbation - at first it feels good, but afterwards, you realise you've just fucked yourself!"
